Mount Everest: Rescuers race to reach stranded hikers

Rescue workers were mobilised to help hundreds of hikers trapped by heavy snow at tourist campsites on the eastern face of Mount Everest in Tibet, according to Chinese state media.

About 350 hikers have been led to safety, and rescuers have been in contact with another 200 people, Chinese state media reported.

Heavy snowfall that began on Friday evening intensified on the eastern slopes of Mount Everest. The sudden bad weather has also hit Nepal, where torrential rain and flooding killed at least 47 people since Friday.
