Lebanese army urges displaced residents to delay their return to the south as it prepares to deploy

Lebanon’s army has called on displaced residents from the south of the country to delay their return home following a ceasefire that began on Wednesday.

“As the ceasefire comes into effect, the army is taking the necessary measures to complete its deployment in the south as mandated by the Lebanese government,” the army said on X.

“The Army Command urges citizens to delay returning to frontline villages and towns where Israeli forces have advanced until their withdrawal is completed in accordance with the ceasefire agreement.”

The ceasefire deal stipulates that the only armed groups south of Lebanon’s Litani river should be the Lebanese military and UN forces.

On Wednesday morning, displaced residents of southern Lebanon and the Beqaa valley began their return home, forming convoys on highways, according to Lebanese state news agency NNA.

The army encouraged residents to be on alert for unexploded weapons “and suspicious objects left behind by the Israeli forces.”

Israel’s military has also warned Lebanese residents displaced by fighting and evacuation orders not to return to their homes in southern Lebanon immediately.
