Country estate festivals cancelled over finances

Three summer music festivals on historical country estates have been cancelled at the eleventh hour, with the organiser blaming high costs and low ticket sales.

The Heritage Live festivals promised stellar line-ups, including Christina Aguilera, Eric Clapton and Lionel Richie at the royal estate at Sandringham in Norfolk in August.

Scissor Sisters were on the bill at Audley End House in Essex, also in August, and Richard Ashcroft was among the headliners at the Englefield Estate in Berkshire in July.

The organiser, GCE Live, said a financial rescue package had fallen through, making it impossible to continue.

In an online message, it said: “We’re devastated to report the heartbreaking news that we have no choice but to cancel this summer’s HeritageLive festivals.

“As one of the few remaining British independent promoters, it’s become almost impossible to compete in what has become an increasingly saturated festival market.

“The might of huge multi-nationals has had the adverse effect of driving up supplier, artist and staffing costs.

“The cost of living crisis combined with general financial uncertainty has resulted in several shows having far lower than average ticket sales.”

The firm said it was grateful for customers’ support over the past 10 years.

The day festival series has previously seen performances from The Who, Sir Tom Jones and Sir Van Morrison.

Organiser Giles Cooper OBE is chairman of the Royal Variety Charity and produces the annual Royal Variety Performance.

GCE Live said its ticket agents should offer refunds “with a reasonable period”.
